The Constitution is the supreme law of the land and the guiding blueprint for American government, but a recent poll shows that many Americans have only a limited understanding of its key concepts.
The American Bar Association is sponsoring two efforts to promote public understanding of our Constitution’s key ideas and values. The newly appointed Commission on Civic Education and the Separation of Powers is developing ways to enhance public understanding of the doctrine of separation of powers and the role of an independent judiciary.
In addition, the ABA Division for Public Education has developed a program, Conversations on the Constitution, to assist the nation’s knowledge of the Constitution. A new Web site, www.abaconstitution.org, includes educational discussions, interactive knowledge tests and the chance to receive a free pocket-sized Constitution.
