Domestic Surveillance
The American Bar Association House of Delegates voted overwhelmingly at the 2006 ABA Midyear Meeting to urge the Bush Administration to comply with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act by seeking court orders for domestic wiretaps in terrorism investigations, or seek amendment of the act if needed to protect national security. It also called on Congress to investigate the National Security Agency domestic surveillance program and review the intelligence oversight process.

"Times of conflict have often put stress on America's liberties," said ABA President Michael S. Greco. But he added that asking Americans to give up their liberties for the sake of security is a "false choice." In transmitting the new policy to President Bush, Greco pointed out it was developed by an ABA task force that included among its members a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a former general counsel of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency.
